Do I need a case for the Samsung Galaxy Active?

The Samsung Galaxy Active loves a swim.. apparently. It’s probably still not a good idea to drop it though!

Some devices cry out for something special in terms of protection. Take the original Galaxy S4 for instance. With all that smooth plastic and glass – plus the fact that you’re probably spending over £30 a month on your mobile, you automatically head for the strongest phone cover you can get your hands on.

But what about those phones that are billed as indestructible? The Samsung Galaxy Active is one such model.  Is it the first phone that’s entirely self-sufficient so far as protection is concerned or are Samsung lulling us into a false sense of security?

So what is the Galaxy S4 Active?

It’s kind of like the outdoorsy twin brother of the Galaxy S4. It’s got the same 5 inch screen, the same processor (so it’s just as quick) and runs the same software. The difference is all in the build. The S4’s glossy black panel has been replaced by a matte one. There’s also a rubber bumper at the top and bottom and there’s a rubber seal over the USB port. What’s more, the phone’s waterproof to a depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. Samsung say you can even use it for underwater shots when scuba-diving.

Sounds great! Any downsides?

Not many - although it’s hardly compact. It’s longer, thicker and a full 23g heavier than the original. Top-end phones don’t look like they’re getting smaller any time soon as the Galaxy Active demonstrates. How are people getting around this? What we find at Mobile Madhouse is that the smartest of smartphone owners tend to head straight for our wallet cover range. The beauty of these is that instead of having to remember your wallet, phone and keys, you’ve only got two items to pick up before you leave the house. What’s more, you’re cutting down on the number of individual items you’re carting around in your pockets or bag.

But with the Galaxy Active I don’t need to worry about damage, right?

Erm, not quite. A matte finish is just as liable to scratches as a gloss finish. Sure, the bezel edge on the Galaxy Active plays its part in keeping the screen free from damage if the phone’s laid on its front. That doesn’t help much though if you’re one of those people who can’t help slipping your phone in the same pocket as your keys and change. Galaxy S4 Active flip covers are great if you fall into that category.

Any final advice?

Yes. Don’t get fobbed off with an ill-fitting case for your Galaxy S4 Active – and don’t try to shoehorn it into a cover designed for its older brother. Here at Mobile Madhouse our designers have made sure that our Galaxy S4 Active cases are a precision fit for this particular mobile. Don’t settle for anything less!
