Does your phone match your personality?

Does your phone match your personality?

Got an iPhone 5S? You’re a 25 to 39-year-old guy with around £1000 spare cash to spend each month. When you’re not hard at it in your business consultancy, you spend your time watching The Hairy Bikers and listening to The Smiths.

Prefer a Samsung Galaxy S4? You’re a woman under 40 who works in retail, plays pool and darts and shops at Lidl.

These portraits are conjured up by the recently launched YouGov Profiles service, described as an online “media planning and audience segmentation tool” aimed at businesses and brands to help them find out more about their customers.

The results are drawn from data collected from 190,000 people after quizzing them on a whole range of stuff – from their income and car they drive through to their favourite food and celebrities. The profiles are based not on what makes up a typical user of a particular product or brand but on what differentiates them from users of similar products. As such, the findings tell us that an iPhone 5S user is more likely to enjoy nachos and a pork pie than members of a comparison set – but of course - that’s not necessarily a general characteristic of iPhone 5S owners.

That bloke from Apple and Dave Grohl: both of whom may (or may not) enjoy pies

So do the profiles ring true for different types of phone? We take a look at what the app brings up…

Does ‘Android’ sum up your younger brother?

 YouGovProfiles

Given the sheer number of wallet-friendly Android phones and tablets on the market, it’s perhaps not too much of a surprise that the Twix-munching, TK Maxx-wearing 18 to 24-year old looks very different to an Apple user. Break it down further however, and that image soon changes. Take the Nexus 5 for instance: Google’s reasonably priced former flagship’s user, according to the generator, is a middle aged engineer with a statistically significant preference for African ground nut stew.

A Blackberry is a ‘Dad Phone’ (but you knew that already)

Obama

He may have given up his occasional Marlboro Light, but by all accounts, the Leader of the Free World is clinging on to his Blackberry. As well as being a middle-aged Government employee, if President Obama also happens to have some Nick Cave and Billy Ocean LPs in his collection, he seems a pretty good fit for YouGov’s profile.
