iPhone 6S and 6S Plus spec, features, release date and price: everything you need to know

In case you missed it, this year’s biggest phone launch has just taken place and two new mobiles are about to hit the shelves: the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. So is now the time to upgrade? Here’s what we know so far…

iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus: look and feel

Place the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus next to their 2014 equivalents, do you notice the difference? Not really: you get the same screen size variants (4.7 inches and 5.5 inches), the ports and function buttons are in what looks to be exactly the same places and there’s the same brushed aluminium finish.

The biggest bodywork change is linked to build quality. The handsets are put together with a new and improved grade of aluminium to ensure no rerun of last year’s bendgate saga with the iPhone 6 Plus. There’s also a slight tweaking of the dimensions as the new versions are a couple of millimetres longer and wider than their immediate predecessors – as well as being 20g or so heavier. Tip: forget trying to shoehorn your new iPhone into a case designed for last year’s phones and make sure you opt for the right iPhone 6S case to fit your model.

The headline features

3D Touch

This promises a better way of finding your way around your favourite apps without having to scroll through lots of different menus. Basically, 3D Touch works by giving you different options, depending on how long you keep your finger on the screen. So when you first make contact with an app icon, for instance, you’ll get a preview of the app; keep your finger down to fully open the app and stay ‘deep pressed’ to launch a specific area of the app. It’s likely to make most sense in those situations where you tend to follow certain routine, predictable steps – when following directions via Apple Maps, for instance, or when previewing, reading and then replying to messages.

New camera and video

For the rear-facing camera on both new phones, the sensor size has been increased from 8MP to 12MP. You can also now record footage in ultra-high-def 4k resolution. There’s more to picture quality than sensor size, though, and photography fans will need to wait until the phone is released to see how it stacks up in real life against the top Android camera phones (the Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4).

New processor

This is Apple’s new A9 chipset, bringing with it a big jump in terms of speed and memory. So why,you may ask, should you care about this if your current phone does everything you ask of it without any hint of stutter? In reality, you’re unlikely to notice the difference (unless you’ve got a model older than the iPhone 5S). It makes more sense when you take into account Apple’s upcoming platform update (iOS 9). This promises to make it easier to do different things at once (e.g. use Apple Maps while you’ve got a completely different App open). The extra power under the bonnet that comes with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus makes it possible for iPhone users to make the most of those new capabilities.

Release date, variants and pricing

6s release

Each phone is available in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB variants and in black, silver, gold and pink. The handset costs for the iPhone 6S are £539, £619 and £699. For the iPhone 6S Plus, the figures are £619, £699 and £789. Most carriers are rolling out pre-orders right now and the phones are expected to go on general release on 25 September. If previous years are anything to go by, the next few months should also see phone companies reducing their prices on iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S contracts.
