Mobile phone highlights of 2014

Just a year or so ago, if you want lightning fast performance, the ability to view videos on a HD display and near -DSLR quality photography from a mobile phone, your choices were fairly limited. A look back at 2014’s crop of top-end mobiles demonstrates that all of these things are now standard.  So what were the best phones of the year? We take a look back…

Samsung Galaxy S5

The basics

  • Operating system: Android,
  • Screen: 5.1-inch, 1,920 x 1080 pixels, 432ppi
  • Processor: 2.5 GHz, Quad-core Snapdragon 801
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM, 16 or 32 GB internal storage expandable up to 128 GB
  • Camera: 16 MP (rear), 2.1 MP (front)

 Samsung Galaxy S5

In mobile phone terms, it seems a lifetime ago that Samsung unveiled its flagship model for 2014. The consensus of opinion on its launch was that it offered everything you’d expect from a premium mobile – along with a few headline features such as a heart rate monitor, water resistance, excellent battery life and innovative photo editing tools. It may no longer have quite the same wow factor – (especially when stacked up against the Galaxy Note 4) but it remains a sound choice of mobile to see you into 2015 and beyond.

htc one m8

With its aluminium uni-body, the HTC One M8 looks and feels like a premium device. On its release just weeks after the Samsung Galaxy S5, it quickly stole the limelight as the latest must-have Android mobile.  Speed and performance, motion gesturing capabilities, an intuitive interface and Extreme Power Saving mode: all of these added up to offer the smoothest phone experience around. On top of this came improved BoomSound speakers – making this phone a fantastic choice for anyone looking for an elite mobile entertainment system.

Thinking of getting hold of HTC’s premium device? Check out HTC One M8 cases from Mobile Madhouse.

LG G3

The basics

  • Operating system: Android
  • Screen: 5.5-inch 2,560 x 1440 pixels, 534ppi
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM (with the 16 GB version) and 3GB (with the 32 GB version). 16 or 32 GB internal storage expandable up to 2 TB
  • Camera: 13 MP (rear), 2.1 MP (front)

LG G3

When released, the LG G3 was the first mobile to boast Quad HD display and offered the sharpest screen around. With the capacity to expand the phone’s memory up to 2TB, this phone is capable of storing an entire media library and a laser-based auto focus feature also means that the camera is pretty special too.

Make sure that lightweight chassis is protected by getting your hands on one of our LG G3 cases.

Sony Xperia Z3

The basics

  • Operating system: Android
  • Screen: 5.2-inch 1,920 x 1080 pixels, 424ppi
  • Processor: 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 Quad-Core
  • Memory: 3 GB RAM, 16/32 GB internal storage expandable up to 128GB
  • Camera: 20.7 MP (rear), 2.2 MP (front)

Xperia Z3

For owners of its immediate predecessor, the Sony Xperia Z3 probably doesn’t represent enough of a leap forward to justify an automatic upgrade. For anyone else, it amounts to a serious contender for your next mobile. The standard features (great screen, camera and performance) are all present and correct. If you’re a serious gamer, the PS4 Remote Play option might just swing it for you.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

The basics:

  • Operating system: iOS
  • iPhone 6 Screen: 4.7-inch 1,334 x 750 pixels, 326ppi. iPhone 6 Plus screen: 5.5-inch 1,920 x 1080 pixels, 401ppi
  • Processor: Apple A8 chip with 64-bit architecture
  • Memory: 1GB RAM. Choice of 16/64/128GB internal storage
  • 8-megapixel iSight Camera

iPhone 6/6Plus

You generally know what to expect with the iPhone – but this year, with the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple finally offered something to compete in the ‘phablet’ territory. The 5.5-inch model also features optical image stabilisation, making this variant worthy of serious consideration for fans of the big screen who also take their photography seriously. As well as a thinner body, bigger screen, faster processor and improved camera compared to the iPhone 5S, both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus boast Apple’s new payment system, which integrates seamlessly with TouchID – offering the possibility of allowing you to leave your wallet at home (depending of course on the extent to which shops themselves take up the technology).

Our range of iPhone 6 cases and iPhone 6 Plus cases features designer accessories from some of the biggest names in smartphone protection.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The basics

  • Operating system: Android
  • Screen: 5.7-inch. 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, 515ppi
  • Processor: Samsung Exynos 2.7 GHz Octa-Core
  • Memory: 3GB RAM. 3 GB internal storage extendable to 128GB
  • Camera: 16MP rear and 3.7MP front

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The last big release of 2014, the Note 4 offers pretty much everything you could wish for from a phablet. Even Samsung’s ‘S Pen’ has been improved with upgraded software which means its handwriting recognition capability has really hit form. This comes on top of a camera with optical image stabilisation, the highest resolution screen currently on the market and an interface that concentrates on getting the basics spot on.

Keep that huge screen in mint condition with Samsung Galaxy Note 4 cases from Mobile Madhouse.
