MWC 2015: Samsung Galaxy S6, HTC One M9 and a new Windows phone?

Hang on for just a few weeks! That’s our advice for fans of top-end Android phones who are thinking of upgrading. Barcelona’s Mobile World Conference takes place at the beginning of March and all the indications are that HTC and Samsung will use it to unveil their latest top-end smartphones. Microsoft should give us something to look at too…

MWC: what is it?

The Mobile World Congress is one of the biggest mobile events of the year – where developers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs and investors get together exchange ideas, do deals and showcase new products.  Last year wearable tech (mostly watches) was all the rage. For 2015, expect the Internet of Things (i.e. controlling your fridge and what-not from your mobile) to feature heavily.

It’s the phones themselves that grab most of the headlines, though. All the major smartphone manufacturers are likely to be in attendance – but if the rumour mill is to be believed, the big launches will come from Samsung and HTC (Sony and LG will be launching their flagships later in the year).

Samsung Galaxy S6

Samsung has two top-end smartphone ranges: the Galaxy ‘S’ model and the Galaxy ‘Note’ phablet. If you want the very latest spec, but you think the recently released 5.7-inch Note 4 is a little too much phone to handle, the S6 is the mobile to look out for this year.

Expect the S6 to be officially unwrapped at a special event on 1 March. Leaks and rumours have been coming thick and fast over the last few months. From these, we can get a pretty good idea of what to expect:

  • Expect the unveiling of two phones: the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge; the latter featuring a display that extends over the edges of the phone
  • The plastic design of the S5 has been ditched in favour of an aluminium unibody chassis
  • Both the S6 and the S6 Edge are expected to have a screen size of around 5 inches
  • The phone is likely to feature a 20MP rear camera and a 2K Full HD display
  • Samsung’s very own version of Android, TouchWiz is likely to be scaled back – making it easy for users to customise their interface by removing chunks they don’t need
  • Possible bad news for fans of the removable battery: it’s apparently not available with the S6

HTC One M9

While Samsung steals the headlines with its marketing juggernaut, HTC gets on with putting out “quietly brilliant” phones. There were some suggestions that HTC’s 2015 flagship would be going under the name ‘Hima’ – although it now seems more likely that this was a project codename – not a brand name. A release date of 1 March seems on the cards for the One M9.

HTC seems to be somewhat better than Samsung at keeping its cards close to its chest. Nevertheless, a few key details for the M9 have leaked:

  • 3GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 810 chipset
  • The UltraPixel camera of the M8 has been removed in favour of a 20MP camera
  • Surround-effect sound from a set of updated ‘BoomSound’ speakers
  • Design-wise, HTC seems to be deliberately putting out multiple decoy devices to keep us guessing – but few would bet against the M9 having the type of plush metallic bodywork that defined previous generations of the ‘One’.

Windows Phones…

Are you looking to kit out your workforce with a set of futureproof Windows phones? Perhaps you fancy an upgrade from your aging Lumia 930? So far as top-end Microsoft phones are concerned, there possibly won’t be that much to excite you at this year’s MWC. Later this year we will see the roll-out of Windows 10 and the suggestion is that Microsoft will wait until then before unveiling this year’s flagship phone. In the meantime, the Barcelona event could witness the launch of a follow-up to the mid-range Lumia 830
