Samsung Galaxy S6 rumours: is it worth waiting for?

Not long to go now until the first big phone launch of 2015: the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S6.

So is Samsung’s 2015 flagship going to be ever-so-slightly bigger, better and faster than last year’s offering? Are there any genuine surprises in store? The rumour mill is in full swing right now. We take a look at what to expect…

When will the Samsung Galaxy S6 be released?

The Mobile World Conference is the year’s first big phone-industry get-together and it’s scheduled for the beginning of March. Assuming Samsung is not going to depart from its established launch pattern, we can expect the S6 to make an appearance either at the MWC or a day or two before. Expect to be able to put in pre-orders for the phone in around March and to be able to get your hands on one from April time.

What will it look like?

Is the latest edition to the ‘S’ series likely to pick up many admiring glances? First off, here’s a concept image from vouchercodespro.com – courtesy of PC Advisor :

So it seems a curved edge display could be on the cards for Samsung’s new flagship. Whether or not this will come as standard or will be made available as an optional variant (the Galaxy S6 Edge, for instance) remains to be seen.

Metal or plastic?

Do you prefer the reassuring grip of a plastic rear? Perhaps you’re a fan of the type of brushed aluminium finish you get with the HTC One M8? If you fall into the latter camp, you could be in luck. The image above comes from nowhereelse.fr and is said to be a leaked image of the metallic (unfinished) bodywork of the S6. Whereas the S5 came in for criticism from some quarters for being a little too ‘plasticky’, it seems a more premium metal feel is going to be on offer with the S6.

How big will the S6 screen be?

At 5.1 inches, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is already pretty much as big as you can go without drifting into phablet territory. And of course, if it’s a massive Samsung mobile you’re after, there’s always the recently released Note 4 to consider. As such, expect a screen in the 5.1 to 5.3-inch size zone for the S6.

As for sheer quality of display, the next big thing is 4K resolution; i.e. the type of accuracy in picture reproduction which just a few years ago, was limited to digital cinemas and the movie projection industry. There’s an outside chance that the S6 will be Samsung’s first 4K mobile.

Galaxy S6 camera rumours

For what to expect, take a closer look at the Galaxy Note 4. Based on leaked benchmarking reports, we are likely to see a 16MP or 20MP primary camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS): perfect for shooting jitter-free video.

Galaxy S6 processor and memory

The S6 is likely to feature one of Qualcomm’s two new processors – the Snapdragon 808 or 810. As such expect the new phone to be the quickest and most powerful performer on the market (for the time being, at least). It is expected to be available in three internal storage variants: 32, 64 or 128GB.

Can we expect any new treats?

There’s a suggestion that Samsung will be looking to streamline its TouchWiz user interface to get rid of unnecessary distractions (think in terms of the Nexus 6).

Don’t expect the phone to be laden with gimmicky apps. Do expect further strides in terms of fingerprint recognition capabilities – and decent pair of Sennheiser earbuds included in the bundle.
