The 3 Best Android Phones of 2015

A quick look back over the year reminds us that there’s no shortage of awesome Android phones out there. The LG G4, HTC One M9, Sony Xperia Z5: none of these would look out of place in any ‘best of’ roundup.

But rather than just listing the usual suspects of top spec mobiles, we’d like to focus on three that are worth special attention; each for very different reasons. Take a look and see if you’d agree…

Samsung Galaxy S6: the world’s best camera phone?

What is it?

Samsung’s most recent version of its top spec ‘S’ series.  It happens to be the UK’s most popular Android phone in terms of sales, followed closely by the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge- (essentially the same phone but with a curved version of that full HD 5.1-inch touchscreen).

Why should I buy it?

These days, all top mobiles do everything you could ask of them. So how do you make a phone really stand out? Look closely at the camera; one of the main things that manufacturers focus on to get you to part with your cash.

With photography and video, there’s little point in having bewildering technical capabilities if you neither know nor care how to make the most of them. So with this year’s flagship offering, Samsung packed in a ton of features with ‘user friendly’ written all over them. Point and click and let your phone do the work.

It gauges lighting conditions and compensates for low light remarkably effectively; it comes with optical image stabilisation and motion-tracking for locking in on moving targets as well as quick and accurate auto-focus.  The consensus of reviewers’ opinions is that if you want the best camera phone, this is the one to go for.

Google Nexus 6P: for a big, pure Android experience.

What is it?

A big (5.7-inch screen) no-nonsense mobile built by Huawei under the Nexus banner.

Why should I buy it?

Here’s one for Android aficionados; for people who aren’t especially interested in gimmicky add-ons bundled in by phone manufacturers but who want their phones to last – and to be first in line for useful operating system updates.

This is where the Nexus range comes into its own. The latest version of Android comes pre-packed, but more importantly, so too does the hardware capabilities to really make the most of it. This includes Nexus Imprint, a fingerprint sensor that’s all geared up for the new version of Google Pay.

An all-metal frame, stunning display, decent (but not world beating) camera and the same 64-bit processor as the likes of the HTC One M9 and Xperia Z5 means it ticks all the right boxes on general performance too.

Essential extras

The Nexus 6P boasts a 26 percent higher capacity battery than its nearest Apple equivalent, the iPhone 6S Plus. But getting through a full day of moderate usage without charging up is still a big ask. Get hold of a Powerbank  portable charger to make sure you never run out when on the move.

Motorola Moto G (3rd Gen): the obvious choice for pay-as-you-go

What is it?

A 5.1-inch unskinned Android phone with surprisingly decent specs for a very modest price tag.

Why should I buy it?

Not everyone wants to be locked into a £30 or £40-per month contract for their mobile. There was a time when ‘budget’ meant making serious compromises on specs and quality – then along came the first Moto G; featuring a price tag of less than £150 but performance that rivalled much more expensive models.

The latest version carries on that theme; with a bigger screen, the ability to handle most tasks (including gaming) with ease and a starting price of £150. It’s chunky in design, but pretty resilient.
