Five Reasons to Own the Samsung Galaxy S5

The Galaxy S5 is here. The focus, according to Samsung, is “on what matters most to consumers”.

It might not be a game changer in terms of innovation (you’d struggle to tell it apart from the S4 in promo shots for instance). What it does have though is a handful of useful little features that makes the Samsung Galaxy S5 a pretty irresistible option if you’re due an upgrade soon.

We’ve rounded up Samsung's launch info and hands-on reactions to identify 5 reasons why you need one in your life…

1. The Galaxy S5 will Make you Healthier

There’s a strong focus on health and fitness. The Galaxy S5 features a heart rate monitor that tracks your pulse and transfers that information to Samsung’s in-built fitness app, Health 3.0. The phone doubles as a pedometer in your pocket and includes extra tools to let you keep an eye on your diet and how hard you’re exercising. Basically, you get everything you need to build up a personalised exercise regime.

2. You Can Pay Securely by Finger Swipe

The new fingerprint sensor on the S5 has attracted plenty of attention. Fingerprint recognition technology isn’t exactly new (it’s already on the iPhone 5s). With the Galaxy S5 though, you can use fingerprint recognition to authorise PayPal to buy anything online. Samsung promises further developments – which means you might eventually be able to use it to buy physical goods in shops.

The finger swipe facility is also linked to the phone’s Privacy Mode so you can select what you want to keep private from anyone else who might get hold of your mobile.

3. You Can Drop it in the Bath

According to Samsung, the Galaxy S5 is completely sealed from dust and should still work even if it’s dunked in up to three feet of water for as long as half an hour.

4. The Only Camera You’ll Ever Need?

The camera capability on the Galaxy S5 gets very close to the type of quality you’d expect on advanced stand-alone DSLR cameras. It features 16 megapixels (boosted from 13 MP on the S4). The number of pixels isn’t necessarily the be-all-and-end-all with a camera though, and it’s the specific features that really make this camera stand out. According to Samsung, the autofocus can capture an image in 0.3 seconds – making it the fastest autofocus time you’ll see on a smartphone. An advanced High Dynamic Range (HDR) is designed to “reproduce natural light and colour with striking intensity in any circumstances”. A particularly nice touch is the Selective Focus feature, allowing you to concentrate on a specific area of a picture while blurring out the background.

The video is pretty impressive too. The video capture capability of the Galaxy S5 is 4000 pixels. The screen of the phone can’t actually pick up this level of detail (it’s 1080p) so you’ll need to transfer your videos to a 4k TV to see your footage in all its ultra high-def glory.

5. Bigger and Better

The screen on the Galaxy S5 is 5.1 inches – so it’s ever-so-slightly bigger than the S4. Samsung has stuck with a plastic body, although this time it’ll be available in a choice of black, white, blue or gold. The state-of-the-art processor is accompanied by a Download Booster to give you the “fastest available connection” no matter where you are.
