What’s the best new phone for 2014? Mobile Madhouse roundup of recent top-end releases

Spring’s here – which means if you’re in the market for a new phone, there are plenty of new models to choose from. We take a closer look at the latest batch of releases…

It’s certainly been a busy few months in the world of mobile phones. Hot on the heels of Samsung’s launch of its flagship, the S5 came HTC’s equally impressive One M8 – along with some cool offerings from Nokia and Sony.  Here’s a summary of some of the more notable recent arrivals to the shelves…

Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung Galaxy S5

This phone’s immediate predecessor, the S4 had sold around 80 million units by the end of 2013. It’s clear Samsung didn’t want to stray too far from a winning formula with the latest flagship. In terms of looks, the new model is almost indistinguishable from the S4. The screen size has been increased ever so slightly to 5.1 inches and the bodywork is still dominated by plastic – albeit with a new dimpled vinyl finish.

New innovations include a fingerprint scanner, heart rate sensor and fitness tracker whereas the 16mp camera now has a selective focus shooting mode to capture different focal lengths of images and allows users to adjust the focus after capturing the image. All gimmicks aside, if you’re looking for the fastest, most powerful phone on the market right now, the S5 is going to be the obvious choice for many.

HTC One M8

HTC One M8

In terms of power and performance, there’s very little between the Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8. The major difference is all to do with the look and feel.  Instead of a plastic finish, the One M8 features a single metal body that curves around the edges – all the way to the edges of the 5-inch touchscreen. The camera earned particular praise for its performance in low light level conditions and the ‘BoomSound’ speakers from last year’s HTC One have been given a 25% boost in volume for a genuine room-filling capability. Summed up as a gimmick-free “powerful, premium smartphone”, HTC’s offering is a match for anything out there.

Mobile Madhouse has a fantastic range of accessories for the HTC One M8 from cool, simple flip cases through to a selection of official HTC cases such as this retro style Dot View cover.

Sony Xperia Z2

Sony Xperia Z2

Another big challenger at the top end of the market is Sony’s Z2. Featuring aluminium bodywork and plenty of glass, this is another premium addition to the Xperia range. It boasts a superb camera and video capability(including a cool way of creating slow-mo video effects) , full HD clarity, - in addition to being waterproof.

Roxfit is the name to watch out for when it comes to looking after your Xperia phone. This manufacturer is partnered with Sony to create exceptional protective covers for the Xperia Z2 – and here at Mobile Madhouse we’re pleased to stock the very best in the range.

Nokia Lumia 930

Nokia 930

If you want the very latest and best Windows Phone experience, it’s worth hanging on just a little while longer for the Nokia Lumia 930. With a rollout across Europe expected imminently, this phone is designed to ensure Nokia is able to compete with the very best Android offerings.

If you’ve never given thought to Windows phones before, this phone is definitely going to be worth a look. With ‘Live Tiles’ it’s easy to navigate and packs a lot into a beautiful simple package!
