A Brief History of the Samsung Galaxy S Series
Starting out way back in 2010, the Samsung Galaxy S Series has been a mainstay in the world of smartphone innovation for half a decade.
Announced in March 2010, the Samsung Galaxy S was the South Korean giant’s first venture into the rapidly growing US smartphone market. Having struggled with previous feature phones running on its own, much-maligned operating system, Samsung decided to take the plunge and team up with Google’s Android alongside HTC and Motorola. If you can’t beat ‘em, you may as well join 'em, right? And what a decision that proved to be.
Despite a modest-at-best reception, the inaugural S Series iteration boasted a vivacious 4-inch touchscreen display and a top-of-the-line processor, making the debut model the firm’s first to challenge the might of the iPhone.
Undeterred by poor sales, Samsung plodded on and released the S2 in 2011 to rave reviews and the well-deserved crown of Smartphone of the Year at the Mobile World Congress Global Awards. Samsung had finally hit the big time, and their relatively quiet announcement of the S3 garnered unprecedented interest with over 9 million pre-orders in two weeks. Achieving what they initially set out to do with the S Series, a Samsung device was finally being regarded as an iPhone killer and was again awarded Smartphone of the Year.
2013 saw the release of the fourth handset in the S Series. Sporting improved hardware and a state-of-the-art 1920x1080 SuperAMOLED display, 2GB of RAM, 13MP camera and a rapid Snapdragon 600 processor, the Samsung Galaxy S4 was a beast. Regardless of modest critical reviews, the handset broke previous records and sold more than 40 million units, making Samsung the most popular manufacturer in the Android market with a 65% share of all Android devices.
2014 witnessed another year, another Samsung flagship. Featuring an improved build quality, textured rear and IP67 water and dust resistance, the Galaxy S5 came with the latest Android 4.4 operating system and made the most successful smartphone ever even better!
For 2015, Samsung have not only announced their best, most impressively specced smartphone to date in the form of the stunning S6, they’ve also unveiled something a little different – the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. With an innovative display that extends over the edge of the phone, the Edge will feature pretty much the same specs as the standard S6, but with a little more pizazz!
The latest models prove that Samsung doesn’t indent to stop revolutionising smartphones and going toe-to-toe with big hitters such as Apple , HTC and LG any time soon. We predict the ever-popular S Series will be around for many years to come.
